- Growing up in the cultural melting pot of Hong Kong, Jan quickly developed a fascination for the world unleashed by his laserdisc player and the power of filmmaking. At 21, he completed a post-graduate diploma at the VCA School of Film & Television in Melbourne, Australia. As a young director/DP he started working as a commercial filmmaker on a wide array of projects as partner of a production company.
2007 marked a move to Brisbane and working under the tutelage of Ron Johanson ACS, federal president of the Australian Cinematographers Society. By 2009 the focus was placed solely on the camera department and he lensed Jucy, his first feature credit as cinematographer, which premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. The subsequent fascinating trip to NYC cemented the urge to explore beyond the home base of Sydney.
Jan enjoys a healthy mix of advertising, indie feature film, TV promo, music video, TV & web series work. He is a passionate collaborator, works fast & efficiently, whilst remaining calm. His images punch above their budget weight.
He lives in Brooklyn Heights with his producer wife Belinda and their two furry kids Webster & Hercules.
2014 will see the release of You Must Be Joking, his second feature credit and marks year two of this exciting cinematic American journey.
