George Higgins(1911-1994)

George Higgins was born in Sheffield in Yorkshire. He studied at Art College before switching to Photography. After a spell on local Sheffield papers as a Press Photographer, he moved to London in the 1935 and worked in Fleet Street for National papers. At the outbreak of war in 1939 he joined the RAF and was sent to the Photographic Section. He was promoted to Corporal and served with distinction in the UK, Middle East, India and Burma and was Mentioned in Dispatches. After the war he joined MGM Studios in Boreham Wood as a publicity Still Photographer working on films such as "Edward, My Son" before transferring to ABPC Elstree Studios, where he remained for the majority of his career. In 1948 his photograph of Anna Neagle in "Spring in Park Lane" was judged as Best Action Still at the British Film Academy Exhibition. Among the notable film productions that George worked on during this period were: "Moby Dick", "Duel in the Jungle", "Tarzan and the Lost Safari", "1984", "The Sundowners", "The Rebel", "Billy Budd" and "Masque of the Red Death" George went Freelance when ABPC reduced it's Stills Department in the1970's. He died in 1995.
