The Classics

The Classics were a '50s/'60s "doo-wop" group that came out of Brooklyn, NY. They were known originally as The Perennials and had formed in high school. They performed at high-school dances and clubs in the Brooklyn area, and eventually gained the attention of Jim Gribble, an artists manager, who got them a recording deal. Their first release, "Cinderella" on Dart Records in 1960, didn't do much business. Their second, "Life Is But a Dream", did a bit better, earning a spot on the R&B charts. A change of labels, to Musicnote, resulted in their best-known, and biggest, hit, "Till Then", in 1963. They never had another record hit as big, however, despite constant changes of labels, possibly because the "doo-wop" style was pretty much over by the early 1960s, mainly due to the "British Invasion" of groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The group went through several personnel changes, and as of this writing still performs at oldies shows.
