On March 20, 2017, he was convicted on 29 felony counts, including kidnapping and sexual assault with a weapon, for which he faces life in prison, for his assault of his ex-girlfriend Christy Mack in August 2014. The jury deadlocked on two counts of attempted murder. On June 5, 2017, he was sentenced to an aggregate sentence of life in prison with possibility of parole after 36 years has been served.

Was released from the UFC in 2008 after making controversial comments about the death of former UFC fighter Evan Tanner on his MySpace blog.

Spent a year in jail for a felony assault conviction; he was released in 2011.

In August of 2014 his ex-girlfriend, porn star Christy Mack. filed charges against him for beating her severely enough for her to be hospitalized. She said he broke into her apartment in Las Vegas, NV, and beat up a male friend, then assaulted and raped her. She was hospitalized with 18 broken bones, had several teeth knocked out, a broken nose and several knife wounds.

War Machine was featured in the January 2014 issue of Hustler Magazine in a nude pictorial with porn actress and then-girlfriend Christy Mack.
