The Caretaker is the stage name of James Leyland Kirby, a British musician and composer of ambient and experimental electronic music. His pseudonym, The Caretaker, is inspired by the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining. His music uses samples of old dance records from the 1920s to 1940s, manipulated to evoke memory, nostalgia, and mental deterioration.
His most famous work is Everywhere at the End of Time (2016-2019), a series of six albums that musically depicts the progression of dementia, from the initial loss of memory to the complete dissolution of consciousness.
