  • Marianna Economou is an award-winning Greek documentary filmmaker and producer whose work combines anthropology and photojournalism with an interest in intimate human stories. Her documentaries use individual experiences to examine wider social, environmental and cultural issues, often focusing on communities and relationships with a strong sense of place. Her feature documentary When Tomatoes Met Wagner (2019) premiered at the Berlinale, became an Oscar contender in the Foreign Language Film category, and was named Best Documentary by the Greek Film Academy. Another major work, Longest Run (2015), received an Honorary Mention and the VER.DI Award at the Leipzig International Documentary Film Festival and was selected for the European Film Academy Awards. Economou has also directed documentaries including To sholeio (2001), Food for Love (2013) and Twelve Neighbours (2010), while her television work includes documentary series produced for ERT, Vouli and Cosmote TV. She was a founding member and president of the Greek Documentary Association (Hellasdoc) from 2017 to 2022 and is a member of both the European Film Academy and the Greek Film Academy. In 2005, she co-founded DOC3 Productions with Valerie Kontakos and Amalia Zepou, producing documentary films and television series for Greek and international audiences.
