- Christopher McCandless was born on February 12, 1968 in El Segundo, California, USA. He died on August 18, 1992 in Stampede Trail, Alaska, USA.
- He was cremated and his ashes were carried in a backpack by his sister Carine McCandless, who delivered her brother's remains from Alaska to the east coast by plane on September 19, 1992.

- Journalist Jon Krakauer wrote an 9,000-words article about him titled "Death of an Innocent", published on the January 1993 issue of magazine Outside. Eventually he expanded the article as book, publishing it on 1996 under the title "Into the Wild". It would be the basis for the 2007 movie adaptation, directed by Sean Penn.
- After the premiere of the movie Into the Wild (2007) about McCandless, Ron Lamothe made a documentary named The Call of the Wild (2007) questioning the conclusions of the Jon Krakauer's book as well as Sean Penn's movie (which is based on Krakauer's book).
