- While growing up in Concord NH, Steelman's father Barry Steelman owned and operated a single-screen movie theater called Cinema 93. James Steelman spent a lot of time there, and even started working there in 1977... helping to clean up between packed screenings of "Star Wars" at the age of 8. He continued to work there and in other movie theaters until graduating from film school in 1996.
- A fervent sake enthusiast, Steelman started a tradition on "Tiny House Nation" of celebrating the end of difficult weeks by hosting a "Sake O'Clockee". Participants are encouraged to bring a bottle of their favorite sake at end of day, and the entire post production team shares some much needed stress relief.
