Biography

Barry Kemp was born on May 14, 1940 in Birmingham, West Midlands, England, UK. He was married to Miriam Bertram. He died on May 15, 2024 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, UK.

He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2011 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to archaeology, education and International Relations with Egypt. He is the Senior Research Fellow for the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.

His widely renowned book Ancient Egypt: Anatomy of a Civilisation is a core text of Egyptology and many Ancient History courses.

Studied Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1962.

Professor Emeritus of Egyptology at Cambridge.

Well known for his long directorship of the excavations at Akhenaten's cult city of the Aten, Tel el-Amanra.
