Her first regular TV role was cooking alongside host Judith Chalmers on Afternoon Plus for Thames TV in the early 70s, and while her books remained a favourite through the decades it was The Great British Bake Off that turned Mary into a national treasure and fashion icon. She was awarded the CBE in 2012.
