Biography

Thérèse Ahlbeck is a Swedish film director and screenwriter whose work explores people under pressure, the choices they make, the systems they find themselves caught within, and the relationships that are transformed when personal lives collide with larger social forces.

Her work is character-driven and often moves between drama and comedy, with a particular interest in finding warmth, humanity and even humour within serious subject matter. She is drawn to stories where the personal and the political intersect, and where seemingly ordinary people are forced to navigate questions of responsibility, morality and power.

Ahlbeck’s most recent work is The Swedish Connection (Den svenska länken). The 2026 feature film, distributed internationally by Netflix, tells the largely unknown story of Swedish diplomat Gösta Engzell, who challenged established procedures at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and helped Jewish refugees escape Nazi persecution during the Second World War. The film premiered at Göteborg Film Festival and was noted for its inventive approach to an important historical story, combining human-scale drama with humour and an understated tone.

The film reflects Ahlbeck’s particular strength as a director: making larger historical and societal questions tangible through individual characters. Rather than approaching history solely through grand events, she looks for the human contradictions within them, allowing seriousness and comedy, vulnerability and courage, to coexist. Her work is grounded in a strong sense of tone and an ability to move between intimate character work and larger narrative perspectives.

Ahlbeck graduated from the film directing programme at Stockholm’s Dramatiska Institutet. Her graduation film Janna & Liv, starring Sofia Ledarp and Lo Kauppi, was nominated for a Student Academy Award in 2010. Her earlier short films include Perrongen, Fisken och apelsinen and Lost in Stångby, and she has also directed the comedy series Happy Street.

Alongside directing, Ahlbeck continues to write and develop original feature projects. Her ambition is to create films that are accessible and engaging while retaining a distinct artistic voice, stories in which humour and emotional depth can coexist, and where the lives of individual people open a window onto something larger.
