He was drama critic at the Herald Examiner in 1989.

He was in the US army in Europe in the 1950s, then went to London and studied at LAMDA. He later founded the "Open Space" workshop where he taught, wrote and directed plays often on variations of famous texts. He also worked with Peter Brook. The Open Space having closed after 11 years, he went back to America.

He founded the Malibu Stage Company and wrote many books on acting, directing while directing many plays.
