Stanislav Petrov(1939-2017)
Stanislav Petrov was a Soviet lieutenant colonel whose judgment prevented nuclear war. On September 26, 1983, he faced a false alarm indicating incoming U.S. missiles. Trusting his intuition, he reported it as a malfunction, averting retaliation. Born in Vladivostok, he later retired near Moscow. His calm decision during the Cold War earned him recognition worldwide as the man who saved the world.
