Biography

  • Jack Elliott Hobbs is a British filmmaker, director and cinematographer whose work explores identity, creativity and the search for meaning.

He is the founder of Flowspire, an independent production company through which he has directed and photographed documentary, commercial and branded work across the UK and internationally.

Hobbs grew up at Childwickbury, the Hertfordshire home of his grandfather, filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. Although surrounded by filmmaking from an early age, he initially pursued music, running a recording studio and releasing his own work before moving into filmmaking and cinematography.

His work is characterised by a documentary-led approach, with an emphasis on natural performances, human behaviour and visually cinematic storytelling.

His debut feature documentary, Worthmaking, examines why people devote themselves to making things and what creativity, craft and purposeful work can offer in a world increasingly shaped by automation and artificial intelligence. The film brings together makers and creative practitioners from different disciplines to explore broader questions of identity, purpose and what makes human effort feel worthwhile.

Alongside his filmmaking, Hobbs creates satirical work under the Hobbsworth persona, using his relationship to a celebrated filmmaking legacy as a starting point for exploring inherited identity, status, self-worth and the absurdities of trying to establish a meaningful identity in public.
