On May 10, 1999, Sardina was doing lawn work at her home in Milwaukee when a speeding car lost control, sideswiped another vehicle and then struck Sardinia, severing her left leg a few inches above her ankle. She was fitted with a prosthetic device. The 74-year-old driver was ticketed with driving at an unreasonable speed.
