Agnieszka Smoczynska is an award-winning Polish film and television director known for her visually astounding, genre-bending storytelling and bold cinematic vision. An alumnus of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School in Katowice, she has established herself as one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive and prophetic voices.
She shot to international prominence with her feature film debut, The Lure (2015). The 1980s-set, goth-musical horror mashup about carnivorous mermaid sisters won the Special Jury Award for Unique Vision and Design at the Sundance Film Festival and was later released as part of the prestigious Criterion Collection. She followed her debut with the critically acclaimed psychological drama Fugue (2018), which premiered in the Critics' Week section at the Cannes Film Festival.
As of 2026, Smoczynska continues to expand her global reach with high-profile English-language projects. She made her English-language debut with The Silent Twins (2022) starring Letitia Wright, which screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and won the Golden Lions Award at the Gdynia Film Festival. Her latest project is the AI-themed sci-fi thriller Hot Spot (2026), starring Noomi Rapace and distributed globally by Focus Features. In addition to her feature films, her directing credits include episodes of the international television series 1983 and Warrior Nun.
