- While with CBS, he served as communications officer for Richard E. Byrd's second Antarctic expedition, based in Little America, Antarctica. The Murphy Inlet was named for Murphy by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1960.
- Author of the Duke of Windsor's autobiography "A King's Story: The Memoirs of HRH the Duke of Windsor", and the Duchess of Windsor's autobiography "The Heart Has Its Reasons".
