Biography

Charles Lago is a film and theater producer, former talent manager, and arts and entertainment executive whose career has spanned theater, film, television, live performance, and talent representation.

Lago currently serves as Executive Director of the California Capital Film Office, where he works to attract and support film, television, commercial, and documentary production in the Sacramento region. He is also a producer through Fat Elephant Productions, developing and producing film and documentary projects, including Saving Sizemore, an intimate documentary exploring the extraordinary life, career, and struggles of actor Tom Sizemore.

For many years, Lago worked extensively in talent management, representing a diverse roster of prominent actors, musicians, television personalities, and cultural figures. His clients have included Tom Sizemore, Sally Kellerman, Bud Cort, Britt Ekland, David Proval, Robert LaSardo, Doug Hutchison, musician Bertie Higgins, Survivor winner Richard Hatch, television personality Josh Flagg, Heidi Fleiss, and former Hells Angels leader George Christie, among others.

His career in entertainment began in live theater and special events. Through Authors on Tour, Lago worked with an eclectic roster of nationally known authors, entertainers, political figures, and personalities, including Arianna Huffington, John Dean, Mariel Hemingway, George McGovern, Ann Richards, Tommy Chong, Phyllis Diller, Dennis Rodman, and Ed McMahon. Authors on Tour eventually led to the formation of DTLA Entertainment Group, founded by Lago and Chris Johnson, which expanded into talent management, film production, and publishing.

Before entering talent management, Lago established himself as a prolific theater producer. He began producing in Palm Springs, mounting more than 100 plays and solo performances, before spending seven years producing theater in San Diego. In 2000, the San Diego Union-Tribune described him as "one of the most prolific theater producers in San Diego."

Lago founded San Diego's 6@Penn Studio, which became known for presenting provocative and innovative solo performance and theater. Productions included Sherry Glaser's Family Secrets, which later became the longest-running one-woman show in Off-Broadway history; legendary performance artist Annie Sprinkle's Herstory of Porn; David Schmader's acclaimed Straight; and works by internationally recognized performance artist Tim Miller.

Among Lago's most memorable theatrical collaborations was his work with legendary British writer and raconteur Quentin Crisp. Lago revived and produced An Evening with Quentin Crisp, taking Crisp to cities throughout the United States and subsequently arranging a six-city UK tour in 1999. The tour sold out, but Crisp died peacefully at age 90 shortly after arriving in Manchester for the first performance. The scheduled performances continued as tributes to the singular cultural figure whose life inspired the acclaimed film The Naked Civil Servant, starring John Hurt, and Sting's song "Englishman in New York."

Today, Lago continues to develop and produce projects across film, documentary, theater, and live entertainment, drawing on more than three decades of experience working with artists, filmmakers, performers, and cultural figures.
