Biography

Steve Spangler started his career in television in 1991 as the host of the nationally syndicated series News for Kids, produced by NBC Business Video. Steve joined KUSA-TV in Denver in 2000 as an on-air talent featuring weekly education-based segments that showcased engaging science experiments viewers could try at home. Steve's work in television news earned him two Heartland Emmy Awards in 1997 and 2010.

Steve Spangler hosts the nationally syndicated television series DIY Sci (2016-2025), where viewers learn how to use do-it-yourself experiments to amaze friends. The weekly series features jaw-dropping science experiments viewers can do at home using easy to find materials that are guaranteed to create moments of wonder, discovery and exploration. DIY Sci is part of a 3-hour E/I (Educational and Informational) syndication block called Xploration Station created by Steve Rotfeld Productions (SRP). The DIY Sci show has been nominated for 3 Daytime Emmy Awards including Best Host in a Daytime Series. The show is available on Fox and CW affiliates as well as streaming on Amazon, Hulu and more.

His videos on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook have more than 3.5 billion views with 4.3 million followers (as of January 2025). Parents and educators widely utilize his books and online experiments as valuable resources to boost student engagement and interest in STEM-based careers.

Steve Spangler is probably best known for his Mentos and Diet Coke experiment that went viral in 2005. The video taught millions of people how to use science to turn an ordinary bottle of Diet Coke and a roll of Mentos into an erupting soda geyser. His original Mentos and Diet Coke video posted on Youtube in September 2005 went viral and spawned thousands of other exploding soda geyser videos. Spangler's engaging approach to communicating science on television and through online video caught the attention of Google and Youtube in 2011. Spangler and his team were one of one hundred funded content contributors for the Youtube Original Content project. The Spangler Effect debuted in February 2012 and was featured on Youtube for two seasons - 63 episodes were produced.

In recognition of his exceptional speaking skills, Steve Spangler was inducted into the prestigious Speaker Hall of Fame by the National Speakers Association in July 2010. He stands among an elite group of only 242 professional speakers worldwide to receive this distinguished honor. For the past three years, Steve Spangler has been honored to be included in the Global Gurus Top 30 in Education. This achievement recognizes Steve's passion for finding the most creative ways to inspire students and educators worldwide.

In 2022, Spangler joined the faculty at High Point University (High Point, North Carolina) as their STEM Educator in Residence. In this role, he collaborates with students and faculty to design transformational experiences that inspire future generations of scientists and engineers.
