Biography

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Bill is a Canadian singer/songwriter who first came to prominence with the 1960s rock band, 'The Collectors'. Better known for his work with another band, 'Chilliwack' in the 1970s and '80s, he has produced numerous recordings and won several Canadian music awards, including a Juno and a Genie. He also served as musical director for the Canadian edition of 'Sesame Street' for six years, and more recently as a board member of several musicians' associations.

My work is play. Even though it's difficult work, requiring years of preparation and constant retraining, it must always contain a spirit of play - otherwise my audience would not enjoy it. It makes work a joy.

Fear has at least two layers: the fear of a certain thing and a fear of that fear. The first fear is difficult to do much about in the instant that it occurs, but the second one can be dealt with. Most people get nervous if they have to speak publicly. I do. But if you realize that you will be nervous, and then notice that, yes, you are nervous, it releases you in a small but important way. You're not overwhelmed, and so can keep a clear head and make choices.

The amount of time you can devote to something in your life is inconceivable to a young person. But the rewards for putting that time in, especially when you get closer to the end of your life, can really be wonderful.

It's a shame how little our culture supports self-knowledge and the discovery of real beauty. Unfortunately, it's almost all about money. Where, but in a few stories, songs, paintings is it expressed that life itself is wonderful?

Music is a deep kind of fun, like dancing. Molecular enjoyment. I always have a joy hangover the next day.
