Vanessa Whyte shot Jeff Pope's true-crime ITV drama A Confession, starring Martin Freeman, Imelda Staunton and Siobhan Finneran, which was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Drama Series, and nominated for Best Mini-Series at the Broadcast Awards 2020 as well as Best New Drama at the National Television Awards.

Vanessa also lensed the 2018 BAFTA and Royal Television Society Award-winning drama Murdered For Being Different, directed by Paul Andrew Williams.

She photographed Operator, which won the BAFTA for Best Short Film 2016, and another short, Bovril Pam, directed by Vanessa Caswill and starring Jodie Comer, was nominated for the same award in 2019.

Vanessa was named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit in 2018.

Vanessa Whyte BSC is a London-based Director of Photography who began her career operating on multi-camera music television before going on to shoot across all genres.

She holds a Master's in Cinematography from the National Film and Television School, having first studied History of Art at Cambridge University - a background that informs her keenly composed, painterly approach to the frame.

Named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit in 2018, Whyte has shot several major award-winning productions, including Seasons 2, 3 and 4 of the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Ted Lasso and the BAFTA-nominated A Confession. She also photographed Murdered for Being Different, which won both a BAFTA and a Royal Television Society Award, and shot the short Operator, which took home the BAFTA for Best Short Film in 2016.

Vanesss'a feature film debut announced her as a major talent. She shot Dragonfly on Super 16mm for director Paul Andrew Williams, a deliberate choice that gives the film a look both timeless and emotionally resonant. The film won the International Feature Award at Galway Film Fleadh and the Joint Performance Award at Tribeca Film Festival in 2025. Critics singled out Whyte's camerawork as a key ingredient in its tense, unsettling atmosphere.

In 2025, Whyte served as cinematographer on A Friend of Dorothy, starring Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry, which went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film at the 98th Oscars. Reviewers noted that her work lent the short a cinematic polish that rivals feature film production.

Off set, Whyte co-founded illuminatrix, a collective platforming female cinematographers in an industry where women represent fewer than seven percent of DPs in the UK.
