- Idil Ibrahim grew up in movie theaters. Her cousin managed some of the best of them, and she watched everything: auteur to mainstream, foreign to blockbuster. That education never left her.
She has directed and worked across Africa, including Timbuktu, the Middle East, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and North and South America, with electricity and without. Her work has screened at Sundance, Tribeca, TIFF, Clermont-Ferrand, IFFR, and BlackStar. She co-wrote the Season 2 episode Camel on a Stick with showrunner Lee Eisenberg and was a consulting producer on the Apple TV+ anthology series Little America, sharing a Humanitas Prize nomination for the episode. She is a 2024 SFFILM Rainin Fellow, a TIFF Writers' Studio alumna and a recipient of the CHANEL Women Writers' Network grant through TIFF's Share Her Journey, and was selected as a director for Queen Latifah’s Queen Collective program with Tribeca Studios and P&G.
A speaker at the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and jury member of the Plural+ Youth Festival, she shows up as a human first and a filmmaker second. That’s how you get inside Shimo la Tewa, a maximum security prison in Mombasa housing accused pirates. It’s how you get a performance out of someone who has never been in front of a camera. And it is how the stories she finds make it to screen.
She’s been in some serious places and situations but she is not against comedy. She laughs a lot.
She studied at UC Berkeley and NYU.
