Biography

Dutch film director, screenwriter, and creative producer Boudewijn Koole is one of the most original and acclaimed filmmakers from the Netherlands. His work, ranging from intimate documentaries to powerful feature films, is celebrated for its emotional depth, visual poetry, and universal themes. Koole has received numerous international awards, including the First Feature Award at the Berlinale for "Kauwboy" (2012) and a Dutch Academy Award (Golden Calf) for Best Direction for his feature "Beyond Sleep" (2016).

Boudewijn Koole earned his Master’s degree in Industrial Design from Delft University of Technology (1984-1991). His design background is clearly reflected in his films: precise visual compositions, a keen eye for detail, and a unique visual language. A self-taught filmmaker, he began his career by directing documentaries. Koole gained international recognition with his debut feature film, "Kauwboy" (2012), which won over 30 international awards and was the Dutch submission for the Oscars. His subsequent films, such as "Beyond Sleep" (2016) and "Disappearance" (2017), further established his reputation as a director who blends realism with poetic storytelling. As a creative producer, Koole is a co-founder of Witfilm, a production company focused on innovative films and socially conscious documentaries. Under his leadership, Witfilm has produced award-winning projects, including the International Emmy Award-winning documentary "Dance or Die" (2019).
