- Was law school-bound when he graduated from University of Southern California in Political Science and Communications with Honors, but a writing and performing for theater workshop changed the course of his life.
- Edward Gunawan won the Jury Award for Best Director (Short Film) for "Laundromat" at the 19th CLIP: Tampa LGBT Film Festival. "Laundromat" also won the Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Fresno LGBT Film Festival.
- After earning a scholarship to the East West Players Acting conservatory in Los Angeles, CA (USA), Edward successfully made his professional theater debut at the East West Player's main-stage hit show "The Joy Luck Club" in 2008.
- "Miss Indonesia" (O/T: "Nona Indonesia"), a feature-length screenplay he co-wrote with Lucky Kuswandi, won the Best Feature Screenplay at the 2006 Jakarta International Film Festival Script Development Competition, sponsored by the Hubert Bals Fund of Rotterdam International Film Festival.
- Was a Project:Involve filmmaking fellow with Academy Award-winner Chris Tashima as his mentor at Film Independent in Los Angeles, CA (USA).
