- She has two sons, Sam and Jaime, from her marriage to artist Mark Orange.
- She moved to New York in 1988 and first worked for designer Anne Klein and then designer Donna Karan before starting her own label.
- She graduated from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin with a Bachelors of Arts degree.
- Born in New York but moved at the age of two to Ireland with her parents and four siblings. Two of her brothers and one of her sisters are musicians - Kevin Shields, Jimi Shields (Rollerscate Skinny) and Anne-Marie Shields.
