Biography

Melissa Parry has worked as a freelance film editor since 2005, shaping culturally significant stories across documentaries, feature films and series. Her work has earned international recognition and multiple awards. In 2010, she received the South African Guild of Editors acronym in recognition of her creative contribution to the craft.

She holds a Master’s degree in History of Art from the University of the Witwatersrand, where she used film as a research tool to explore the biographies of selected objects in the Standard Bank African Art Collection.

In 2022 Melissa was welcomed as an International Partner member of the American Cinema Editors (ACE). She participated as a panelist on the ACE EditFest Global 2022 panel Editing for the World, and was featured on the Global Editing Perspectives podcast, released in early 2025.

In 2025, she served as a juror at the 7th Joburg Film Festival and the 46th Durban International Film Festival. That same year, she participated as a panellist at the 16th Durban FilmMart, contributing to the discussion African Editor Organisations Talking Together: Towards Working Together. She also participated in the panel Who Can Tell the Story at the CineGouna Forum at the 8th edition of the El Gouna Film Festival, where she mentored the CineGouna Funding films in post-production.

Melissa presented a workshop titled How Johannesburg’s Past Shapes It’s Cinematic Future at the 3rd Film Criticism Workshop in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This workshop has since been developed into an essay for a forthcoming book to be published by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Film Commission in 2026.
