Hugh Carey was born on April 11, 1919 in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. He was married to Evangeline Gouletas and Helen Twohy. He died on August 7, 2011 in Shelter Island, New York, USA.

Father of Susan Carey Dempsey and father-in-law of Martin J. Dempsey of Newtown, Pennsylvania. Grandfather of Susan Elizabeth Dempsey (born in 1979) and grandfather-in-law of Gerald Halloran III (born in 1978).

Former Governor of the State of New York (January 1, 1975 - December 31, 1982).

Earned the Combat Infantry Award, the Bronze Star, and the Croix de Guerre while in the Army during World War II. His unit liberated the Nordhausen concentration camp.

Democrat Congressional representative from New York state, 3 January 1961 - 31 December 1984. Resigned from office to be sworn in as governor of New York the following day.
