Biography

Chris Welcker

Biography

  • Chris Welcker is an Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated Production Sound Mixer whose work blends a lifelong background in music with a passion for filmmaking and technology.

A native of New Orleans and former jazz saxophonist, Welcker began his career studying jazz performance before turning his attention to music media, visual arts and commercial scoring. That path eventually led him to film production, where he worked his way through the sound department as a Utility Sound Technician and Boom Operator. Mentored by Oscar-winning Production Sound Mixer Kirk Francis, Welcker transitioned to mixing with the Key & Peele comedy "Keanu."

His musical background has become a defining element of his career, particularly on projects where music and performance are deeply intertwined. His credits include the Mötley Crüe biopic "The Dirt," "Bill & Ted Face the Music," and Amazon Prime Video’s "Daisy Jones & The Six." His work on "Daisy Jones" earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing and a Cinema Audio Society Award nomination.

Welcker later served as Production Sound Mixer on Ryan Coogler’s "Sinners," combining live music recording with the challenges of large-format filmmaking. His work on the film earned him an Academy Award nomination and BAFTA nomination for Best Sound. He was presented with the Variety Artisans Award at the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival as well as winning the 2026 AIS Lumiere Award and an Astra Award from The Hollywood Alliance for his work on Sinners.

His other credits include "Primetime," "Rebel Ridge," "Carry-On," "Five Nights at Freddy’s," and "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues."

Drawing on his background as a musician, Welcker approaches production sound as an integral part of performance and storytelling, with an emphasis on collaboration, creative problem-solving and capturing the authenticity of what happens in front of the camera.
