- Maxim Biller was born on August 25, 1960 in Prague, Czechoslovakia [now Czech Republic].
- Many noted artists such as Feridun Zaimoglu, Elfriede Jelinek, Peter Zadek, Luc Bondy, Iris Berben and Senta Berger showed their solidarity to him after "Esra" had been prohibited.
- His novel "Esra" (2003) was prohibited from sale shortly after its release because his former longtime companion, actress Ayse Romey, and her mother obtained a provisional order. They claimed to have seen themselves reflected in characters in the book. A Munich court obliged their request to take it from circulation, which was confirmed by the German Federal Court (12 October 2003).
- Born to Russian Jewish parents, he emigrated with his family from Prague to West Germany in 1970 and grew up in Munich.
