Mini bio

  • Colin Theys is a filmmaker who has turned a lifelong obsession with technical geekery and cinematic storytelling into a career defined by ambitious logistics and visual scope. A 2007 graduate of Wesleyan University, he began his journey creating award-winning CGI animations and short films before cutting his teeth in the trenches of micro-budget horror.

Colin has long worked closely with Connecticut-based Synthetic Cinema International (SCI). His early feature work included directing cult favorite "Alien Opponent" and "Steve Niles' Remains", the first original feature for NBCUniversal's Chiller Network, followed by adaptations of the Michael Laimo novels "Dead Souls" and "Deep in the Darkness". He also helmed the 1964-set holiday comedy "Wishin' and Hopin'", based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Wally Lamb.

Recently, Colin has focused on destination filmmaking, directing eight feature films in exciting and challenging environments around the globe. His work has taken productions from the tropical waters of the Maldives and the dense rainforests of the Amazon to extreme, freezing high-altitude galciers. He leverages his background in visual effects and production to manage the unique challenges of these locations, ensuring high production value in unpredictable conditions.

In addition to directing, Colin produces with SCI, helping to execute dozens of movies for an array of television networks, streamers, and independent filmmakers. He believes a director should maintain a collaborative, high-energy, hands-on presence, and Colin and usually be found standing right by the camera to stay close to the performance.
