Biography

Ramraj Nahata

Mini bio

  • Ramraj Nahta was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. He is a fearless and impartial Indian film journalist, producer, and industry leader. He was best known as the publisher and editor of Film Information, a widely respected trade magazine that has served the Indian film industry since 6 October 1973. Under his stewardship, the magazine completed 50 years of continuous publication in 2023 and continues to thrive in digital format. The magazine is now managed by his son, Komal Nahta, a prominent film trade analyst and TV host.

Nahta was also an accomplished film producer, having produced numerous films in Hindi, Gujarati, and Rajasthani. Several of his Gujarati-language productions were honored with state government awards for their cultural and cinematic contributions.

He served as the President of the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) from 1984 to 1989, during which he championed industry welfare and policy reforms.

A prominent figure in the Indian film industry, Ramraj Nahta played a key leadership role during a critical period in 1986 when, under his initiative, the entire Maharashtra film industry went on strike for over a month. This historic industry-wide shutdown, led by Nahta, compelled the state government to introduce vital concessions and benefits to revive the struggling industry marking the first major relief package from the government to the film sector.
