Biography

Emily Sweeney became the Boston Globe's first social video journalist in 2026.

In addition to appearing in videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, Sweeney also writes the Globe's "Blotter Tales" column, which is published in the Metro section every Sunday, and "Cold Case Files," a regular series and newsletter about unsolved murders.

A proud native of Dorchester, Sweeney graduated from Boston Latin School (where she made history as the first girl ever to play on the boys’ varsity ice hockey team) and Northeastern University (where she played on NU’s championship-winning Division 1 women’s ice hockey team).

As a journalist Sweeney has written about a range of topics -- from the business of mining conflict minerals to overcrowding in prisons -- and she's been featured on many TV and radio programs and networks, including the Tamron Hall Show, the Today Show, BBC Radio, Bloomberg TV, CBS News, CNN, Court TV, the History Channel, NPR, Oxygen, Science Channel, and Travel Channel, as well as international media outlets in Australia, Ireland, Japan, Poland, and Sweden.

She's also the author of three nonfiction books: "Boston Organized Crime," "Gangland Boston," and "Dropkick Murphy: A Legendary Life."
