Elaine Waterson was born on February 15, 1943 in Hull, Yorkshire, England, UK. She was married to George Knight. She died on September 4, 1998 in Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire, England, UK.

Cited the poet Arthur Rimbaud as the only influence on her music and songwriting.

She was a member of Hull folk group The Watersons, together with her brother Michael Waterson and sister Norma Waterson and their cousin John Harrison, and latterly Norma's husband Martin Carthy.

She was usually referred to, professionally as well as privately, by her nickname Lal Waterson.
