Biography

Bill Plante was born on January 14, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is known for CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite (1941), Inside Hurricane Katrina Update (2006) and Jim and Sarah Brady: A Tribute (2015). He was married to Robin Smith and Barbara Anne (Barnes) Ortieg. He died on September 28, 2022 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.

Veteran journalist and correspondent for CBS News, having joined the network in June, 1964. He has been the senior White House correspondent for CBS since January, 1993.

He adopted his first wife's four sons (Patrick, Michael, Daniel & Christopher), whose father, Jules Pierre Orteig Jr., had died of a heart attack in 1960.

He attended Loyola University Chicago, where he received a bachelor's degree in the humanities. He dropped out of Chicago-Kent law school when he was hired by a Milwaukee TV station. After gaining broadcast experience, he won a journalism fellowship to Columbia University and then joined CBS News.
