- Alto saxophonist, trained at Boston Conservatory and under Arthur Honegger in Paris. Strongly influenced by Charlie Parker. Recorded extensively in the mid- and late 1950's, both with other musicians and as leader of small combos. Also a noted composer, including of classical symphonic music.
- Has three children: Bashir, Laila, and Lynette.
- Friends with Clifford Brown, Benny Golson, and Quincy Jones.
- Parents are: George General Gryce Sr., and Rebecca Gryce.
- Has one brother Tommy Gryce.
