Biography

Tom Maroney is an Emmy-winning documentary editor, writer, director, and producer with over two decades in nonfiction film and television. Rooted in literature and narrative theory before finding his way to the edit bay, he brings a writer's instinct to structure. His editing work has premiered at Sundance multiple times, including Science Fair, which took the Festival Favorite Award there and the Audience Award at SXSW, Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado, Where's My Roy Cohn, and Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press. He wrote and executive produced Sally, which won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at its Sundance 2025 premiere.

As co-executive producer, director, and writer on Shudder's Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror, he helped shape a series that earned two Dorian Awards, a Chainsaw Award, and an Emmy nomination. Science Fair: The Series, which he also co-executive produced, won a News & Documentary Emmy.

His short documentary Piñatas of Earthly Delights, a portrait of queer Latino artist Roberto Benavidez, premiered at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and screened at Doc10 in Chicago and internationally.
