  • He was born in a room above his grandfather's charcuterie in Burgundy, France. When he was 14, he was apprenticed to a grand pâtissier where he spent three years learning his craft. Following a stint as a pastry cook at the British embassy in Paris, he was hired as a junior chef by the de Rothschild's household before following his brother to work in England in the 1960s.
  • He published 15 books that sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide.
  • He and his brother Albert opened a restaurant in London, Le Gavroche, which in 1982 became the first three-Michelin-star restaurant in the UK. Their Waterside Inn in Berkshire was awarded three Michelin stars in 1985. They also founded the Roux Scholarship to enable chefs in the UK to train in some of the top restaurants in the world.
