  • Arthur N Wood is an artist and inventor, known for his iconic Broken Angel building that stood in the BedStuy/Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn, New York for 27 years before it was taken from him. Before living at the Broken Angel with his wife Cynthia and his two children he lived on Washington Street in Brooklyn, NY. Arthur was born March 25, 1931 in Saratoga Springs, New York. He graduated from Marysville College and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where he received the Deans Bronze Medal in 1953. From 1953-1955 he was in the United States Air Force where he won a Gold Medal in all Air Force art exhibitions at the Beal air base 1954 and the same award in 1955. From 1955-1959 he attended the Teachers College Columbia University in NYC and the American Art School. Arthur worked at Wedgwood China Co. as Staff Designer in the Commemorative Division where he drew 500 designs of colleges, churches and restorations throughout the world each drawing design reproduced under glaze on china plates and dishes 1000 times. During that time he also made master wax models for Tiffany and Co. in New York. From 1959 - present he has been a full time Artist, represented in collections throughout the world. in the 1970's he and his wife, Cynthia bought the building on auction in BedStuy/Clinton hill area of Brooklyn, New York that came to be knows as the Broken Angel building. He built a camera obscura, a forerunner of the modern camera, on one of the towers of the Broken Angel, the only one on the East Coast. In 1973, Arthur was hired to design and create the artwork cover for Todd Rundgren's psychedelic album, A Wizard, A True Star. Since losing his Broken Angel building he continues to paint, There was a Arthur Wood Retrospective at the bau Gallery in Beacon, NY in 2014. Arthur and his wife Cynthia are featured in the feature documentary, A Castle in Brooklyn, King Arthur, narrated by Golden Globe Award winner, Brian Cox.
