Biography

Lazarus X is an American filmmaker, writer, director, cinematographer, producer, editor and showrunner whose work spans narrative film, episodic television, and art cinema across the United States and Europe. Formerly credited as Lamont Pierré, he has over two decades of experience as an independent auteur, having written, directed, shot, edited and produced nearly his entire catalogue.

Lazarus X began developing his voice as a filmmaker while studying English Literature, Creative Writing, and Political Science at Florida State University in the early 2000s. In 2005, he created and independently produced My Brother’s Keeper, a long-form serialized drama series about Black college life, exploring secrecy, masculinity, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, fraternity culture, faith, and coming-of-age within Southern HBCU-adjacent environments. First released episodically online beginning in 2006 and later distributed as a special-edition multi-disc DVD, My Brother’s Keeper predated the rise of streaming platforms and is widely regarded as one of the earliest narrative web-based drama series produced at a television-season scale.

While still a student, Lazarus X publicly presented My Brother’s Keeper during a campus appearance by filmmaker Spike Lee. Following the presentation, Lee requested a copy of the series, marking a formative moment of external validation and early visibility beyond the academic setting.

In 2008, Lazarus X worked in New York under Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Lee Daniels, gaining firsthand experience within studio-level production during the making of Precious. He completed his feature film debut, Talking With the Taxman About Poetry, in 2011. The film premiered in 2013 at both the Pan African Film Festival and the Outfest Fusion Film Festival.

In 2012, Lazarus X became a member of the Writers Guild of America. From 2012 to 2022, he entered his most prolific creative period, emerging as a major early and frontline contributor to the Web Series Revolution of the 2010s. During this decade, he developed, produced, and distributed a wide slate of scripted digital drama series filmed across the United States-most notably in Los Angeles, New York City, Atlanta, and Miami-helping define the scale, thematic ambition, and visual language of independent digital storytelling before the dominance of mainstream streaming platforms.

During this period, Lazarus X founded Arthouse International Studios and its accompanying platform Arthouse Plus+, through which he retained full creative control over development, production, and distribution. Across platforms, his independently produced series have amassed tens of millions of views, sustaining long-term global audiences outside traditional studio systems.

His body of work includes Freefall (2013), The Trouble With Going Somewhere (2014), Miles + Cal (2015), Kaleidoscope (2015), Red Skin (2016), Ghosts of Fort Greene (2017-2019), Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You (2019-2021), Between Blunts & Love Songs (2021), Black Love Future, A.D. (2021), Wards (2023), and the long-running art-cinema series A Beautiful Cruel Thing (2017-2024). These projects earned award wins and major festival honors, including recognized wins for My Brother’s Keeper, Wards, and A Beautiful Cruel Thing, with official selections and awards from festivals such as Urban Mediamakers Film Festival and LA Web Fest.

Beginning in 2024, A Beautiful Cruel Thing marked Lazarus X’s first fully realized international production, with Season 2 filmed across multiple European and Caribbean countries such as Scotland, Spain, France, Italy, Puerto Rico and the Netherlands. The project was notable for extending his independent production practice beyond U.S. borders and establishing a new phase of globally situated storytelling in his work. In 2025, he followed this expansion with the erotic heist drama GUAP, a scripted streaming television series filmed in Naples, Italy, which he wrote, directed, executive produced, and shot.

In addition to his narrative work, Lazarus X is the creator and host of The ARTIST(s) TEMPLE Podcast, a reflective platform centered on creativity, burnout, healing, and sustainable artistic practice. The project functions as a philosophical and practical extension of his filmmaking life, offering space for artists navigating long creative careers outside traditional industry structures.

As of 2026, Lazarus X continues active development and production on projects including Detective Naveed, I Never Asked for Red Roses, I Hear You Leaving, Florida Made Me Do It, The Lives of Men, The Exile of Three Kings, and the afrofuturist project And Kingdoms for Broken Hearts.
