Since Dante Alighieri wrote his masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, between 1302 and 1321, many artists have attempted to visually interpret it through drawings and paintings in the last seven centuries; Sandro Botticelli, Giovanni Stradano, William Blake, Amos Nattini, Francesco Scaramuzza, Gustave Dore and the great Salvador Dali to name a few. However, to this date only one artist, Sandro Botticelli, has interpreted it correctly in the 1480's, according to Italian Dantologists. Gustave Dore did the most famous work first published in 1861 and a century later Salvador Dali did his interpretation in abstract paintings. Now, a contemporary artist has taken the challenge again...

Di Durante, a concept artist himself, has taken on the hard task of bringing to life Dante's Hell on canvas. His focus is not only an accurate interpretation of Dante Alighieri's masterpiece, but also an attempt to influence and educate those unfamiliar with The Divine Comedy. The art seen here by Dino Di Durante is neither the black and white Dore's lithographs, nor the abstract Salvador Dali's paintings done much later. Instead, he offers a rich set of colorful and carefully crafted paintings never seen before. Di Durante's profound interpretation of Hell surpasses that of all others who have attempted to depict what Dante Alighieri put into words seven centuries ago.

Dino Di Durante's visual journey of Dante's Hell started in 2007, with the idea of making a graphic novel, which soon after expanded into this book of illustrations finished in 2013. The reason for the long and arduous work is that Di Durante is a visionary artist and art director who demands dedication, style and attention to detail. Part of his extensive art collection was used in an animation film produced in both English and primitive Italian, titled Dante's Hell Animated and Inferno Dantesco Animato respectively. His complete 72-piece unique art collection was used in the film Dante's Hell documentary featuring over 30 celebrities, professors and Dantologists (Dantisti) from both the United States and Italy.

All the inspired renderings and representations of Dante's poem, as created by Di Durante, come to life in the animated films allowing the viewer to accompany Dante and Virgil through their journey into and out of hell. He painted Inferno with a spectacular sensory depicting the details of Dante's ironic descriptions of the punishment of sinners in the different tiers of hell. Moving along with the animated characters we are allowed to be a voyeur on a dark voyage into the world of the eternally damned. Now, all of Durante's inspired art is depicted in this book.

Dino Di Durante's inspired art, which are depicted in his book, "Inferno - The Art Collection, brings the animations and the documentary Dante's Hell to life. Both, Dante's Hell Animated, Inferno Dantesco Animato and Dante's Hell documentary, are worth experiencing as they provide us with new insight into Dante's Inferno literary masterpiece.

Dino Di Durante has put all his efforts into the amazing venture of bringing Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy masterpiece to life in all possible forms. From the several film versions he has made to the book you hold in your hands one cannot deny this has been a labor of love.
