Biography

South African filmmaker and household name brand actress, Makgano Mamabolo moves very comfortably from in front of the camera to behind the scenes, as a Show Runner: producer; scriptwriter; director... now working internationally, based between Joburg and Copenhagen in Europe. With a bachelor of Performing Arts, she has for the past 22 years, worked on a spectrum of genres from film, TV drama, sitcom, presenting, commercials, soap opera, telenovela, as well as theatre... having starred as: Miss Kwa Kwa - her own one-woman stage production, in theaters country wide, for four years (which has since been adapted into two novels). Behind the scenes, Makgano has worked on a number of critically acclaimed productions, both as a company MD for Puo Pha Productions of TJOVITJO fame on NETFLIX and as a freelancer, having produced the international multiple award-winning documentary: SKULLS OF MY PEOPLE on AL JEZEERA and was the Associate Producer on the award winning Out in Africa feature film: WHILE YOU WEREN'T LOOKING. She volunteers regularly to IRANTI, a queer NGO where she directed a short documentary: I RISE and in 2020 she completed 150 episodes of a long running drama series: LITHAPO as the Creative Producer, after the resounding success of her cinematic comedy performance in the film: ZULU WEDDING on AMAZON and DIAMOND CITY on NETFLIX. Makgano has had the honor of being a 2021 FESPACO film festival Grand Jury member on behalf of the African Union and sat on the SAFTA - Golden Horn Awards Judging panel in 2008&9. She also sits on the Board of the African Craft Trust, since 2011. Makgano is a published poet, a voice over artist and a Master of Ceremonies who also avails herself for panel discussions on the South African Film and Television industry as a queer black female Filmmaker - Showrunner. She has recently wrapped up the development for MTV Shuga - Down South 3 as the Head Writer for PARAMOUNT, after contributing to the VIACOM: Beyond the Binary writer's room, while in the process of securing financing for her debut feature film: FLUID... under her own company: Prism Productions.
