Derrick Sims

Overview

  • Born
    February 11, 1985 · Kingsland, Arkansas, USA
  • Birth name
    Derrick Lee Sims

Biography

  • While studying journalism, Sims directed and shot a short, American Civil War film that was later chosen to play before IMAX revival screenings of Ang Lee's Ride with the Devil (1999). Notoriety from that film led to a position on War Eagle, Arkansas (2007), and in 2008, Sims served as director of photography on The River Within (2009), his first feature as cinematographer.

In 2011, he returned to Arkansas to make his feature directorial-debut, Come Morning (2012). Sims also wrote, photographed, and edited the film. Come Morning (2012) premiered at the 2012 Austin Film Festival, and in 2013, the Oxford Film Festival awarded Sims and his crew a special jury prize for cinematography. The film received the Charles B. Pierce Best of Fest award in 2014.

In 2016, Sims jumped back into the writer/director chair for The Perfect Host: A Southern Gothic Tale (2018). Host premiered in Austin in 2018.

He is the founder of Fabled Motion Pictures and Fabled Effects House and now lives and works in New Zealand.
