Abitur 1966. Agricultural internship, study of agricultural sciences in Kiel. Graduate agricultural engineer, agricultural trainee, second state examination 1976. Since April 1976, agricultural teacher at the Agricultural School in Bredstedt and economic advisor at the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture. 1985 to 1999 President of the German Fisheries Association, Union of Professional and Sport Fishermen (DFV), President of the German Society for Agricultural and Environmental Policy (DGAU); member of the Schleswig-Holstein Hunting Association and the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Agribusiness Leipzig. Federal Cross of Merit. Since 1971 member of the CDU, 1986 to 1992 district chairman of the CDU Nordfriesland. Member of the Bundestag since 1983; 1994 to Oct. 2002 Chairman of the Committee on Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture; since June 2, 2002, State Chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein CDU

resigned April 20, 2005, succeeded by Carl Eduard von Bismarck, Member of the Bundestag.
