Neil Athale

Biography

Neil Athale

Mini bio

  • Neil Dinar Athale is a British Asian film and television composer, songwriter, and producer based in the UK. His work is defined by emotionally resonant, melodic writing and a deeply collaborative approach to storytelling, with credits spanning internationally released feature films.

His latest feature, Giant, is a boxing biopic based on the life of Prince Naseem Hamed. Executive produced by Sylvester Stallone and starring Pierce Brosnan and Amir El-Masry, the film received a wide theatrical release in the UK to huge acclaim and is set for worldwide release throughout 2026.

Athale previously composed the score for the Sky Cinema Original Twist, a modern reimagining of Oliver Twist, starring Academy Award winner Michael Caine alongside Lena Headey, released globally. He also scored the noir thriller Strange but True, produced by La La Land’s Fred Berger and starring Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, and Brian Cox. Following its release, the film reached the Top 10 on Netflix in both the UK and US.

His breakthrough as a feature composer came with the critically acclaimed Wasteland (also known as The Rise). Starring Vanessa Kirby, Iwan Rheon, Neil Maskell, and Timothy Spall, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to strong critical reception before going on to international release. Further feature credits include the British drama North vs South, the comedy drama Golden Years, and Gloves Off.

Born in Yorkshire, Athale moved to London at 18, where he established himself as a session guitarist, touring internationally with a range of successful artists. He later transitioned into songwriting and production, securing a publishing deal with Universal Music and collaborating with major label artists including James Bay, Paloma Faith, George the Poet, and Red Velvet.

This period also informed his work in music supervision, developing a nuanced understanding of artist-led storytelling, licensing, and the integration of songs within narrative film. These experiences continue to shape his work as a composer, underpinning a melodic sensibility and a collaborative ethos central to his approach across film and television.

He is the brother of Director, and frequent collaborator, Rowan Athale.
