- Chaired the Department of Philosophy from 1961 to 1967, when he was made the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Left UT-Austin in 1970 after the College was divided into two separate entities, a College of Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and a College of Natural Sciences, a development he opposed.
- President of Boston University 1971-1996, after which he served as Chancellor for six years.
- Currently styled President-Emiritus of Boston University, he teaches as a professor in B.U. department of International Relations.
