Biography

Martin Schreier

Overview

  • Born
    1980 · Kronberg, Germany

Mini bio

  • Born in Kronberg im Taunus, Schreier began filming at an early age and made short films during his elementary school years. Between 2005 and 2006, he deepened his skills in VFX at the German Filmschool in Berlin before studying directing at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, where he also produced a number of award-winning short films. His academic achievements earned him several scholarships, which enabled him, for example, to participate in the Hollywood Masterclass at UCLA in 2009.

In 2010, Schreier's film The Night Father Christmas Died, a poignant 35-minute short, was nominated for the Student Academy Award. He went on to receive the Pro7/Sat.1 Primetime Award for the thriller Robin Hood, which he directed as his graduation film in 2013. The film premiered as the opening feature at the Max Ophüls Film Festival.

In 2016, Schreier directed Unsere Zeit ist jetzt for Warner Bros., a dynamic mix of biopic, drama, and comedy centered around rap superstar Cro. One of the lead roles was played by Til Schweiger, who also produced the project together with his late partner Tom Zickler. Schreier's further collaboration with Zickler led to his third feature film, Traumfabrik. This homage to the history of cinema was the first in-house production by Studio Babelsberg in over 25 years and marked a major milestone for the world's oldest film studio. The film premiered at various international festivals between 2019 and 2020 and enjoyed a worldwide theatrical release in the US, UK, China, Taiwan, Russia, Italy, and other countries.

Since 2021, Martin Schreier has been working closely with Amazon MGM Studios. He directed One Night Off, the first German film produced for Prime Video. He then went on to direct the series Maxton Hall, which was greenlit for a second season just one week after its release due to its immense global success-and even a third season was commissioned before the second had aired. Martin has directed both Season 2 and Season 3 as the sole director.
