Biography

James L. Brown ACS is an Australian cinematographer known for his work across internationally acclaimed feature films, prestige television drama and high end commercials.

He recently completed production on Season 2 of One Hundred Years of Solitude for Netflix, directed by Laura Mora, serving as lead cinematographer on five of the series’ eight episodes.

Brown first collaborated with Mora on the feature film Matar a Jesús, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before screening at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Chicago International Film Festival, where it received the Roger Ebert Award. His additional feature credits include Savage, directed by Sam Kelly, and Nerve.

His television work includes the Stan and Sundance Institute co-production Totally Completely Fine, created by Gretel Vella and directed by Lucy Gaffy, as well as the AACTA and DGA award-winning series Deadlock. His work also spans documentary and short-form filmmaking, including the ACS Gold-winning short Black Lips and the multi-award-winning The Reluctant Shanty, produced in collaboration with UNHCR.

Alongside his narrative work, Brown has photographed 100's of international commercial campaigns across the United States, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia.

He is a graduate of RMIT University and the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and is an accredited member of the Australian Cinematographers Society.
