- His first reading of anything literate-related to NDes was in 1976 when he read Raymond Moody's Life After Life, which he discounted as anything credible, but it was later a patient of his whose story was in vivid detail of exactly that, that changed his mind. NDEs would become his primary area of neuropsychiatry and one where he would publish hundreds of papers.
- The 1988 TV show Glimpses of Death showcasing his near-death experiences (NDEs) lead him to receive 2,000 letters from people having the same experiences.
- His 1995 book The Truth in the Light: An Investigation of Over 300 Near-Death Experiences established him as an expert in near-death studies.
