Biography

Born in 1962 in Kokomo, Indiana, Fred Wilder was raised in Orange County, California. He suffered many illnesses throughout his childhood and did not attend high school. He was a ferocious reader, devouring the many books of literature, science, engineering, and history that were held by his local library. In 1982, he attended college, studying physics and electrical engineering. He is a self-taught painter whose works have sold world wide. In 2006, he released his first two films to be accepted by film festivals, Scream Karl and Karl Bites (2006). His films contain an otherworldly quality; in some cases the sequences appear to be inexplicable, and he uses stop motion animation to paint emotion into his films. He creates most of the props and scenery himself saying "these are each in their own way a work of art." He chooses to work in Black and White but sometimes inserts scenes with color. He prefers in-camera effects and works with a special camera he built himself. Wilder wants his films to resonate emotionally and instinctively and for every person to come away with their own individual interpretation. As he said, "I do not make movies, I create works of art, whether that medium be canvas, film stock, or video tape." Fred Wilder is original.
