Biography

David Hayman

Overview

  • Died
    May 19, 2020 · Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Mini bio

  • Fashioning himself after Paul Newman's portrayal of player/coach Reggie Dunlop in the 1977 film Slap Shot, David Hayman considers himself equal parts leader and warrior. A cinephile and music historian, with a bizarre knowledge of obscure media and a talent for finding deep meaning in the strangest corners of the Internet, Hayman is the rascal mastermind behind Supergroup Sonic Branding Co.

Serving as its chief music supervisor and creative director, he leads a team of rogue music supervisors, curators and licensing specialists whose mission it is to help brands amplify their authenticity by introducing them to music that not only speaks to their core identity but also enhances their aesthetic.

Armed with wild strategies that he backs up with a whole lot of heart, Hayman is driven by a belief that music matters and a desire to create art out of the assets that inspire each of us daily. His passion for storytelling extends from cinema through to music and beyond, while his extensive industry experience spans more than 15 years and includes notable television series work in both comedy and drama, celebrated independent films, as well as award-winning advertising and Clio playlisting campaigns. Additionally, David has helmed series for Netflix, HULU, ABC, CTV, and CBC.

His most recent credits include: Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band, which opened the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Born To Be Blue, Nirvana The Band The Show, Utopia Falls, Kim's Convenience, and Northern Rescue. David was also part of the Hubert Davis Documentary, Giants of Africa, about 2019 NBA Champions The Toronto Raptor's General Manager, Masai Ujiri.

David is a part-time faculty member at Humber College in Toronto where he focuses on creating mentorship opportunities for emerging artists, curators and music supervisors. He currently is Vice President of the Guild of Music Supervisors of Canada.
